Marian Centre in Edmonton opened as a mission house of Madonna House in 1955. For more than sixty years it offered a soup kitchen and clothing room for those in need.
More recently as other groups were meeting those basic needs, Marian Centre moved in a new direction. We saw the hunger for companionship, the need for a welcoming non-judgmental place of friendship where folks can simply be themselves and find a listening ear. And so we began hosting a Drop-In Morning in order to offer a warm safe place where people can come, to simply enjoy the company of others, have a beverage and snack, chat, play games, or read. We help with various other needs on a one-to -one basis. Our faithful volunteers join us in serving and listening.
For years friends have joined us on Friday evenings to hear reflections and to share on the upcoming Sunday scripture readings, or occasionally some other document of interest. Others come to use our lending library.
Our monthly public Mass and reception, draws a wide variety of friends and families. At the heart of our life is prayer. Each member of our Edmonton Madonna House prays for and intercedes for the marginalized in the inner city.
Marian Centre receives no support from the government or grants of any kind, and has always relied on the support of the wider community to continue our work with those in need.
