The following is taken from a letter sent to all the staff of Madonna House to help us find peace as we face the current sex abuse crisis in the Church. May it do the same for you.
These are difficult weeks to find peace as a Catholic. Yet it is possible in Jesus Christ.
As the disciples stood moribund by fear, remorse, and the confusion of the missing body after his death, the Savior came and stood in their midst, offering them his peace—an encompassing shalom.
He comes to us in these troubled times—in fact he never left. He weeps with the victims while bolstering the ones whose faith is crumbling. He offers a way through the crisis—repentance—for he is the Way.
He offers truth to the compromised, the complicit, to all who have hidden or deceived or not bothered to do anything out of fear—for he is Truth itself, and we have nothing to fear. He offers life and grace, even as we swim in abuse, sin, and shame—for he is the Life.
Let us all keep our eyes on Christ, who offers us his peace even in troubled times.
